If you are experiencing financial problems in these difficult times, there are services which can help. Below is a list of organisations you might like to approach for a short-term loan.
- No interest Loan Scheme (NILS): Provides no interest loans for up to $1500 for low income families and individuals. Loans are for essentials like fridges, education essentials and medical procedures – not rent, bills or debts. Repayments are set at an affordable amount over 12 to 18 months. If you have a health care card/pension card or earn less than $45,000 a year after tax you should consider applying. - Step Up Loan: Provides low interest loans for people on low incomes of between $800 and $3,000. You have three years to pay it back. These loads are for white goods, education related expenses or medical expenses. Find out more here.
- Moneysmart: Provides information for support services available during the coronavirus crisis. Find more information here.
- Financial counselling: Financial counselling is a free and confidential service offered by community organisations, community legal centres and some government agencies. They will help you negotiate with debt collectors or electricity or phone companies threatening to disconnect you and other problems.
